Gunfire erupts at Our Lady of Greenwood Festival on Friday night; suspect in custody

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Several gunshots rang out from a parking lot across from the Our Lady of Greenwood Festival on Friday, a little before 9 p.m. Downtown Greenwood festival-goers were sent running for cover toward the school building and nearby businesses.

Apparently, there was an argument among groups of juveniles. Witnesses said most of the shots were fired into the ground, from the intersection of Smith Valley Road and Meridian Street, toward the festival. One person was known to have been shot in the foot and was treated at a local hospital.

The Greenwood Police Department stated that one person, a 16-year-old male, is in custody at a juvenile detention center and faces multiple charges. The teenage suspect was quickly apprehended by officers at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

The Our Lady of Greenwood Summer Festival was closed for the evening. The three-day event was scheduled to conclude on Saturday. Local and church officials consulted and decided the festival would "go on" on Saturday afternoon and evening. Extra security will be present.
