GREENWOOD, Ind.- The Indiana State Police is investigating a serious accident that occurred Saturday morning on northbound I-65 near Greenwood. The crash was the result of a woman fleeing from police.

The incident began when a trooper attempted to pull over an SUV on northbound I-65 in Bartholomew County near the 75-mile marker for speeding and a false/fictitious license plate. The driver refused to stop, and a chase began.

The trooper pursued the vehicle into Johnson County. As the suspect SUV approached the 99-mile marker, the driver moved to the shoulder to pass traffic, struck a car, and caused a chain-reaction crash involving four cars.

An adult female in one of the vehicles was severely injured. Responding emergency personnel applied multiple tourniquets to her, and she was transported to a local hospital. She is listed as critical but stable. Five other people were transported to area hospitals for various non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle, 25-year-old Nicole Bryant of Indianapolis, was taken into custody by police and then transported to the hospital via ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Northbound I-65 was closed for several hours while crash reconstructionists and detectives investigated the incident. This investigation remains active.

All suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Several agencies assisted in the pursuit and investigation, including the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Greenwood Police Department, the Greenwood Fire Department, and INDOT.
